The Lure, dir. Agnieszka Smoczynska, Poland 2015, 92 min.
One of the most acclaimed Polish film debuts in recent years, Agnieszka Smoczynska’s “The Lure” is a genre-defying horror-musical mash-up. When two mermaids are washed ashore Vistula river, they immediately throw themselves into a whirl of 1980s Warsaw’s nightlife. But their mysterious nature will not allow them to break free. This dark take on a classic Andersen’s tale explores the issues of feminism, sexuality and coming-of-age with a number of catchy songs and equally engaging dance numbers, performed in the glittery, immersive decorations. Savage, camp and original, it is a cult classic in the making.
Newly translated, enhanced English subtitles are among the many treats that the release has been enriched with. Some of the director-approved special edition features include master audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray, making of featuring interviews with i.e. director Agnieszka Smoczynska, actors Marta Mazurek and Michalina Olszanska, screenwriter Robert Bolesto and choreographer Kaya Kołodziejczyk, as well as deleted scenes and two short films directed by Smoczynska, Aria Diva (2007) and Viva Maria! (2010).
